File Server

The following information is available below for your reference.

Back to Linden LAN Home

>> File Server

The LAN file server provides LAN users with controled access on-line file storage space which is safe, secure, highly reliable, and backed up nightly. This space is configured to appear to each network connected PC (or Macintosh) as if it were m a series of additional hard disk running on that system. Which disks appear and what their contents are is controled completely by the Login_ID and Password that was entered when connecting to the LAN.

Files and folders can be stored and retrieved using any of the software installed on your computer (Finder, Windows Explorer, Word, Excel, etc). Files stored with a Macintosh can be opened and edited with Windows and vica versa as long as both systems are running the same software product (appropriate for that file).

File System Access and Storage Security

Access to LAN disks is completely controled by your login ID and password.  What you see and what you have access to is completely controlled by parameters that were assigned when your LAN account was created.  Novell Netware (our LAN operating system) is by far the most secure networking OS on the market.  Your files are safer, and more secure, when stored on these file servers than they are on your own PC!

    Department Assignment
When you log in to the Linden LAN, you are automatically assigned to a department group (PPATH, ENTO, or NUTRISCI).  This grants you full access to your Department_Share directory. THIS FOLDER IS ONLY ACCESSIBLE by members of your department  (accessible to EVERYONE in your department).

    Departmental Workgroup Assignment
The login process also assigns you to a workgroup within the department (either Faculty, Students, Staff, or Office).  This assignment adds you to either the Faculty, Staff, Students, or OfcStaff email mailing lists.

    Home Folder
You are also assigned a home folder that has your login ID as a folder name.  THIS FOLDER IS ONLY ACCESSIBLE to YOU!!

Your user ID and password authenticate you to access file storage areas and network services based appropriate to your workgroup.  The Windows client automatically creates "alias" disk drives for your convenience while you are logged in to the system.  These drives appear to your computer as if they were disk drives installed directly in your machine.

The file system on the PEN server is organized by department; for example the user account "Entouser" is assigned to the department of  "Ento" and the workgroup "Staff"  when that user loged in -- to either the LINDEN tree or to the PEN file server -- they would see the following:

         PEN\ENTO  (I:)
            |__ department_share
            |__ Entouser  (H:)

The picture below shows how this would look in Windows Explorer (NOTE: the Staff_Share folder no longer exists).

    Share Folders

Share folders are used to share files among different groups on the network. Here's how they're set up:

    J:\jshare
Shared FULL ACCESS by all departments on the Linden LAN.
I:\department_share Shared FULL ACCESS by all users in your department.
I:\<labname>_share Shared FULL ACCESS by all users in your lab or workgroup -- Please contact LAN administrator for assistance in setting up this folder.
H:\Public.www Shared READ ONLY access VIA web browsers on the Internet. (only exists if you have requested personal web services)
T:\ (PEN/PUB: ) is READ ONLY to the WORLD via internet (FTP, etc)

    Home Folders

A Home folder is created for each LAN account for "personal" files and folders storage. This folder is visible ONLY when logged into the network using that account's User ID and password.
    • The contents of the home folders are hidden from all users (other than the owner) except for the following:
      • PUBLIC.WWW folder which contains personal web page files.
      • Any sub folder created by user and explicitly shared with others.
Note:  If you want to know who can see/access your home folder, do the following:
    • Open Windows Explorer
    • Right-click on your home folder icon
    • Select Properties
    • Click/select the NetWare Rights tab
      • Your login id should appear in Trustees: window
    • Click on Inherited Rights and Filters... button
      • To give someone else rights to your home folder, do the following:
        • Highlight their User ID in the list of users window
        • Click the Add button
        • Select how much access you want them to have by placing checks in the RWECM & F boxes

      entouser properties and netware rights.

    Public (PUB) Folder

The Folder "Public" located on teh PEN/PUB volume is designed for temporary storage of files which need to be shared with persons outside of our LAN.

Any internet user can connect to the PEN/Pub disk via an FTP client using an "anonymous" login:

    the location is ftp://anonymous@plantpath.wisc.edu

NOTE: the user id "anonymous" is no longer a valid user accouint on our system for security reasons. Please contact the LAN administrator for access instructions

The The PUBLIC folder on the PEN/PUB volume has no pre-defined structure and minimal security.
PEN/PUB:Public features include:

    • No space restriction (other than the capacity of the drive) -- so please clear out what you don't need to share.
    • Minimal security (read access available to anyone on the internet!)
    • No backup to tape !!!! Don't store your only copy on this drive!
    • Any logged-in LAN User can create, modify, or delete any file or directory stored on PEN/PUB
    • Automatically mapped to the T: drive alias by Windows during network login

PEN/PUB:\Public\incoming (Only place on the system where "Anonymous" user can Write)

This folder is designed to be used by LAN users for RECEIVING files from the Internet. Anyone in the world can FTP files to this folder.
This is a more reliable alternative to Email attachments as a way to receive documents from off-campus colaborators.
