How to fix an Excel file that has become corrupted:
See
http://office.microsoft.com/en-ca/assistance/ha010346561033.aspx
for options. They include some repair options built into recent versions of Excel.
The trick of linking to the damaged file from a second Excel file has
worked for me in the past.
You can also disable all Excel add-ins and unload all Excel macros
(from the personal.xls workbook: even if you don't use this hidden
workbook, some programs automatically install macros here). This
could result in the workbook losing functionality when loaded, but
will let you export the data.
