To connect your PC or Mac to the LAN, there are a few steps to follow:

• Convert from Manual to DHCP TCP/IP address assignment
• Assign Computer Name

Convert from Manual to DHCP TCP/IP Address Assignment

[Windows 95/98/ME]

• Right-click on the Network Neighborhood icon on your desktop
• Select Properties or go to Start, Settings, Control Panel; then select the Network option
• Highlight TCP/IP and click on Properties
• Click on Obtain an IP address automatically
• Apply changes and hit OK

[Windows NT]

• Right-click on the Network Neighborhood icon on your desktop
• Select Properties or go to Start, Settings, Control Panel; then select the Network option
• Select Obtain an IP address from a DHCP server
• Old Manual IP addresses will disappear
• Apply changes and hit OK.

[Mac]

• Under the Apple menu, go to Control Panels
• Select TCP/IP
• Under Configure:, select Using DHCP Server
  • Old Manual IP address settings will disappear

Assign a Computer Name

[Windows]

• Right-click on the Network Neighborhood icon on your desktop
• Select Properties or go to Start, Settings, Control Panel; then select the Network option.
• Select the Identification tab.
• Enter a descriptive Computer name:, such as Dell_436 (computer type and room number)
• Computer Description: can be the same as the computer name entered above, or a better description

[Mac]

• Under the Apple menu, go to Control Panels
• Select TCP/IP
• Enter a descriptive computer name under DHCP Client ID:, such as Stuart's Laptop rm 436
