As
of fall 2004 you can access the Linden LAN file servers
via the internet (without installing the Netware
Client on your PC or Mac). Technically this has been
possible for some time using Appletalk and Windows
CIFS (browser) but these depend on campus network
configurations -- which are out of our control --
in order to work. The methods described here use
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and therefore are available
anywhere there is an Internet connection. Following
is a brief description of each of the above topics
(Click on the above links for instructions on setup
and use):
- Through the
Web (NetStorage) is the easiest
connection and only requires a web browser. It, therefore,
is compatible with any operating system (Mac
OS, Windows, Unix, etc). It is basically FTP with
a pretty face.
It does NOT support drag and drop for file transfers.
You must use the menu commands (download, upload,
etc) and you cannot transfer more than a single file
at a time.
- My network Places
-- Windows XP only (also
NetStorage) brings
access to your network folders/drives into Windows
Explorer. This allows you to do anything
with your files AND folders located
on the server drives that you can do with your local
folders/files (eg. drag and drop files and folders
from one drive to another). It
is not compatible with Mac OS and
is a little more complicated to set up than #1.
- Net Drive
(Windows Only) requires
the installation of software on your PC that
will run each time you start up your computer and
make
the connection to the LAN. It is the most like an
actual client but it only gives access to the file
system -- not other LAN services (e.g.. printing).
Once installed and running this option provides a
very usable solution. NOTE: Some users have
had troubles with this method -- let us know if you
do too.
CAUTION: each of these systems
provides connections to your space on the server
(as well as public share folders and drives). Please
take care to protect your password and do not leave
your network connection active after you are finished
working. The best way to insure this is to restart
your computer when finished.
