TSWV Information

Our Current Lab Group

Dr. Tom German

As Pierre used to say, "our fearless leader".  Need I say more?

Paul Flanary (Post-doctoral researcher)

Paul received his Ph.D. from the University of Hawaii, where he studied signal transductionin yeast.

He has done post doc's at Yale University as well as the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

He is now working to develop a reverse-genetics system for Maize Fine Streak Virus (MFSV),

Anna Whitfield (Ph.D. student)

Anna has a Master's degree from the University of California at Davis, where she developed an immunoassay

for TSWV in ornamentals.  She is interested in the role of TSWV proteins in acquisition by the thrips

            vector, Frankliniella occidentalis.

Arne Thompson (Research Specialist)

Arne earned his Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry here at the UW after working as an hourly in the

lab here for over four years.  He is currently working on devising a reverse genetics system in yeast

for TSWV.

Elisabeth Wyman (Undergraduate Assistant)

Beth has been with our research group for almost two years.  She is planning on majoring in biochemistry

and attending medical school here at the UW after completing her bachelor's degree.  She has just

completed an independent research project involving glycosylation of the TSWV glycoproteins.

Ashley Bieber (Undergraduate Assistant)

Ashley has been working her for about one year.  She is planning on majoring in English in a pursuit of

a career as a librarian.  She is responsible for almost all of the general lab maintenance as well as maintaining

our research plant stocks.

Frankliniella occidentalis

The Western Flower Thrips should be included in the list here.  Without their ultimate sacrifice in our lab, we wouldn't

be able to do what we do.  Here's to them!

Collaborators, Former Lab Members, and Other Links

John Sherwood at the University of Georgia
John is a long-time collaborator of ours.  His lab is interested in insect vectors of TSWV.

Diane Ullman at the University of California
Another long-time collaborator and Anna's former major professor, Diane is an excellent electron
microscopist.  She and her lab group recently visited our lab and gave us all a crash course in
            insect physiology.

  Mark Kainz at Colgate University
Mark worked as a post-doc in our lab for a couple of years.  He continued the studies on viral polymerase
activities started by Scott Adkins, a former Ph.D. student.

Dow AgroScience
Another of our former post-docs, Lada Rasochova, worked in our lab and in Paul Ahlquist's lab

(Molecular Virology) on brome mosaic virus.  She is continuing this and related work at Dow.
